Animoca Brands, Planet Hollywood jointly launch themed metaverse, NFT platform


Hong Kong-based blockchain powerhouse Animoca Brands is teaming up with hospitality franchise Planet Hollywood to build a themed metaverse and a NFT platform featuring a large collection of movie memorabilia.

Their joint venture “Meta Hollywood” will see the creation of a community-oriented metaverse and the tokenization of over 60,000 pieces of memorabilia, such as iconic props used by Hollywood stars, photographs and movie posters.

Among them are a jacket worn by “Major” Motoko Kusanagi, played by Scarlett Johansson, in the 2017 film “Ghost in the Shell”, and the Gi seen in the 1984 film The Karate Kid, according to Meta Hollywood’s website. Other notable props encompass different eras in Hollywood history, including those used by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tobey Maguire, Michael J. Fox, Jim Carrey, Sylvester Stallone, George Clooney and Jason Statham.

The items will be sold in a marketplace that will also allow studios and creators to sell behind-the-scenes clips and exclusive interviews in the form of NFTs to fans. A native utility and governance token, HWOOD, will be issued to enable holders to take part in deciding the community’s development.

Further features are expected to be introduced in phases over the coming years, according to the joint venture’s plan. It has plans to integrate Meta Hollywood with The Sandbox, a popular metaverse platform run by Animoca Brands, this year. A play-to-earn function and cross-metaverse capabilities are expected in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

The partnership marks Planet Hollywood’s launch on Web3. Planet Hollywood founder Robert Earl said: “I am thrilled to partner with Animoca Brands as we launch Planet Hollywood into the metaverse. The universal appeal of film, along with our unprecedented collection of iconic memorabilia, make the possibilities limitless.”

Animoca Brands co-founder and executive chairman Yat Siu said the company was excited about the joint venture. “The Meta Hollywood joint venture will create tremendous opportunities by leveraging Planet Hollywood’s vast network of celebrities and IPs and combining them with our industry expertise and our broad portfolio of products and companies,” Siu said.
