Square Enix’s new title SYMBIOGENESIS to use Polygon chain

Square Enix will use the Polygon blockchain for game utilities for its upcoming title SYMBIOGENESIS while utilizing Ethereum for its NFT collectible art components, the game publisher has announced.

When the title was first announced In November 2022, developers originally intended to build it on the Ethereum chain. However, the company said in an February 16 that it would change it to the Polygon blockchain citing its faster data processing and lower fees as reasons.

Symbiogenesis is a free mystery-solving browser game that uncovers the secrets of the world through missions designed around the theme of “monopoly and distribution” in a devastated world, where a diverse story unfolds through the completion of missions and the possession and exchange of NFTs. Some NFTs such as dragons and monsters have already been released, and the company plans to offer approximately 10,000 character NFTs. Players can play without having character NFTs, but NFT holders will be able to create “replica NFTs” that share story information with other players.

Square Enix has announced its focus on blockchain entertainment, and president and chief executive Yosuke Matsuda stated in his 2023 New Year’s Message that the company is preparing to announce several more titles by the end of the year. The company also plans to release a series of collectibles for the popular “Final Fantasy VII” title that can be used as proof of ownership in NFT.

In February 2022, Square Enix established a new “Blockchain Entertainment Division” to promote entertainment in the blockchain domain. It is working with Animoca Brands, a Hong Kong-based blockchain company, the company’s subsidiary NFT game “The Sandbox” and Ubitus, which provides cloud game solutions. In the virtual land “LAND” owned by The Sandbox, the company is building an area that recreates the world of the role-playing game “Dungeon Siege.”
